In 1938, William Ruger decided after two years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that he wanted to pursue other interests. He was twenty years old and had read every book in the New York Public library on the firearms industry. Around this time he received a commission from the U.S. Government to design machine guns. It turned out that designing machine guns for the U.S. government was not all it was cracked up to be. William Ruger quickly moved on to an engineering role at a company called Auto-Ordnance. Within a very short window after joining Auto-Ordnance, William decided that he would form Ruger Corporation in 1941. Ruger Corp.'s mission would be to sell parts to the firearm industry, develop a hardware tool line and produce an automatic pistol. Ruger Corporation was not without growing pains and rapidly shuttered its doors within a couple of years. William Ruger made some mistakes with the first iteration of Ruger but he learned several important lessons from the venture, which would serve him well in the future.
At this time, William Ruger meet Alexander McCormack Sturm. Sturm was a Yale graduate who had met Ruger at several shooting events. The mutual passion they shared for shooting sports sealed the venture. William B. Ruger and Alexander McCormick Sturm founded Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. in 1949. The partnership was a unique one that was formed over a short period of time, as the two became fast friends. Alexander Sturm provided start-up capital in the amount of $50,00. Sturm, Ruger & Co. was incorporated in Southport, CT in 1949. In a tragic turn of events, Alex Sturm died of Hepatitis two years after founding the concern. Bill Ruger ran the company by himself until his retirement in 2000 at the ripe old age of 84. Bill's passion for the firearms industry is legendary. Upon his retirement he exclaimed, "I've never worked a goddamn day in my life!"
Under Bill's leadership, the company developed several successful manufacturing strategies that became the foundation upon which the company was built. Ruger's slogan, "Arms Makers for Responsible Citizens", came from the company's ability to design quality firearms at a reasonable cost. Bill was also famous for saying that a citizen should be able to purchase a firearm for the cost of, "One week's paycheck." As an engineer, Ruger was determined to achieve these goals and precision investment casting techniques were developed in house to build firearms that fulfilled these expectations. Precision investment casting is a process that produces castings out of steel alloys that have the benefit of being extremely strong and inexpensive. Ruger engineered precision steel investment casting into Ruger's DNA. This proprietary manufacturing technique has built Ruger into the firearms powerhouse that it is today. Extremely strong and durable firearms are the hallmark of Ruger's success.
